Training Target

International Master of Business Administration (IMBA for short) is an advanced management program designed for foreign professionals in China. Taught entirely in English, it cultivates professional managers proficient in modern management theories, skills, and techniques, capable of independently engaging in corporate management practices. Upon completion of this program, students should possess the following knowledge, competencies, and qualities:

1. Master fundamental theories in management and economics, along with specialized knowledge and skills in corporate management. Understand global economic trends and cutting-edge developments in business management, while gaining familiarity with China's economic environment and key management challenges.

2. Develop strong analytical thinking, communication, leadership, teamwork, IT application, and adaptability skills. Effectively resolve complex management issues, drive organizational innovation, model innovation, and product/service innovation to create societal value.

3. Possess a broad international perspective, high cultural literacy, a strong sense of social responsibility, and sound professional ethics.

Specific Requirements:

1. Diligently pursue studies and engage in rigorous research to master solid foundational theories and systematic specialized knowledge within the discipline.

2. In academic pursuits, strive to transcend existing disciplinary boundaries, seeking breakthroughs in both temporal and spatial dimensions.

Academic Fields

IMBA program cultivates versatile management professionals with comprehensive background knowledge, adhering to the principle of broad-based, foundational training for masters degree candidates within first-level disciplines. Leveraging the distinctive strengths of School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, the program primarily focuses on corporate management for thesis research.

Training Approach

Advocate the broad-based, foundational training for masters degree candidates within first-level disciplines; Make full use of high-quality educational resources both on and off campus to encourage students to  gain overseas study experience, second campus experience and social practice experience, implementing a joint training by mentor teams.


Study Duration

IMBA students will study full-time for 2 years (4 semesters in total).

The maximum duration of study is 3 years.

Early graduation is not permitted.

Total Credits and Course Setting

IMBA program is organized in a modular format, primarily comprising foundational modules, integrated modules, and practical modules. All courses are taught in English. Students must complete 42 credits before commencing their thesis. Detailed course information is provided in the attachment.

1. Foundational Module: Provides the learning context for IMBA program and essential business administration knowledge, cultivating fundamental competencies and skills for IMBA students.

2. Integration Module: Develops advanced business administration knowledge and practical application capabilities required for IMBA students.

3. Practical Module: Diverse extracurricular and experiential learning activities, including team-building exercises, lecture series, and corporate internships.

Mid-term Assessment

To further standardize the training process for professional degrees in business administration and continuously enhance the quality of graduate education in this field, a mid-term assessment will be conducted during the third semester to evaluate the progress of training plans.

Only those who pass the mid-term assessment may proceed to the thesis writing stage. Those who fail will be handled in accordance with the relevant provisions of Shandong University Mid-Term Assessment Measures for Master's Degree Candidates. Specific requirements are as follows:

1. Assessment of Character and Academic Conduct. This primarily evaluates students' political ideology, moral integrity, and organizational discipline since enrollment. Students exhibiting poor academic conduct, unexcused absences, or violations of university regulations will receive a severe warning or be ordered to withdraw.

2. Coursework Review. The implementation of the teaching plan will be reviewed according to the training program.

3. Review of Other Training Components. The execution of other training components will be reviewed according to the training program.

Professional Practice



Scientific Research and Thesis

Requirements for Innovative Achievements:

1. Cutting-edge: Innovative achievements must reflect the forefront of contemporary management practices, representing novel measures not previously adopted by the research subject (or case enterprise) in the field, and exhibiting a high degree of originality.

2. Valuable: Innovative achievements should enhance the research subject's (or case enterprise's) efficiency and effectiveness, yielding significant economic benefits and organizational management gains.

3. Practical: Innovative achievements should be readily implementable by the research subject (or case company) in practice, with concepts, procedures, methods, and tools designed for straightforward execution and implementation.

4. Theoretically Consistent: Innovative achievements must be grounded in reliable theoretical frameworks, comprehensively reflecting and applying the latest findings from current academic research to enhance their reliability.

To meet these requirements, research topics should possess significant practical value, featuring a prominent theme, clear reasoning, rigorous logic, and scientific methodology. Concepts should be clearly defined; language should be fluent, and expression should be precise.

IMBA theses must present novel insights into the researched topic, demonstrating the author's capability to engage in research work or independently undertake specialized technical tasks. Theses may be written in either Chinese or English, with the main text (excluding footnotes) ranging from 20,000 to 50,000 words or characters. The research and writing period for the thesis is approximately one year. Acceptable thesis formats include: thematic research, corporate diagnosis, case analysis, and research reports.

1. Thesis Topic Selection and Proposal

IMBA students shall complete their thesis topic selection under the guidance of their mentor team. The thesis title must be jointly determined by the student and the team, demonstrating practicality, innovation, and feasibility. IMBA students must finalize their thesis topic and proposal by the third semester. The proposal shall undergo collective review by faculty members of the Department or mentor team, who will provide feedback. Only after the topic is deemed appropriate, the plan feasible, and the proposal formally approved may the student commence thesis writing.

2. Regular Progress Reviews of Thesis Work

Theses must be thoroughly researched and written based on extensive collection of relevant domestic and international research materials. IMBA students are required to report thesis progress periodically within a designated scope. The mentor team and relevant personnel shall participate in these reviews to help students analyze challenges encountered during thesis development, provide timely guidance, and facilitate the smooth progression of research work.

3. Conducting a Comprehensive Review of the Thesis

Three months prior to applying for the thesis defense, IMBA students must present a comprehensive report on their thesis progress and achievements to faculty members within their major and related disciplines, as well as to members of the mentor team. They should solicit extensive feedback to further revise and refine the thesis.

Theses must present clear arguments, demonstrate rigorous logic, offer original insights, provide thorough substantiation, and exhibit fluent language. They should also possess practical significance. Prior to all thesis defenses, anonymous reviews must be conducted. Only candidates meeting defense requirements may proceed to the defense stage. Specific thesis requirements shall be implemented in accordance with relevant university regulations.

Graduation and Degree Awarding

Upon completion of the graduate program, students who have earned the required credits with satisfactory grades, fulfilled all prescribed training components including practical training and thesis work, and successfully defended their thesis will be granted graduation and awarded the Master of International Business Administration degree upon approval by the university and the Degree Evaluation Committee.
